The project has finally started. I have been commissioned by the History Press Ireland to write / gather the Folktales of Co. Longford. I’m very honoured by this and although I’m not a native of the county I’m really looking forward to sharing and highlighting the wealth of folklore that already exists within the county.
I had a meeting Aideen McBride this morning. Aideen has written the Folktales of her native Co.Carlow and the Folk Tales of Co.Tipperary. Aideen was very generous in sharing her experience and offering some very sound advice.
During the summer Anna Delaney of Longford Tourism gave the names of some people in the county who have a wealth of knowledge on the history and folklore of their County. I hope I will be able to call on their advice in the months ahead. I have yet to contact them but I really hope they are willing to help a blow-in like myself.
In fairness I’m not a total blow-in! I spent a lot of time over the years in Edgeworthstown and many of my wife’s people are from the county so hopefully this will get me across the county boundary.
I would love to hear from anyone who has stories of Longford’s rich folklore to contact me either by email at firstname.lastname@example.org; on Facebook or on 087 2627806.
Regards and thanks
